Distinguished figures such as former BESA president Ahsan Ullah (Roni), Sadek Huda (recipient of the Ekushey Heritage Medal), Nasima Mirza (Ekushey Heritage Medalist), Saifur Hasan (Vice President/Acting President), Bashir Mirza, Anamur Rahman (Ekushey Heritage Medalist), and Raihan Rasmin graced the occasion with their presence. Delwar Zahid, in his address, emphasized the enduring relevance of International Mother Language Day, underscoring its role in preserving Bangladesh's rich heritage beyond its borders. He urged the community to stand united against discrimination and racism, emphasizing the need for awareness and solidarity.
The gathering paid homage to the brave souls of the twenty-one language martyrs, offering prayers for their eternal rest, as well as for all those who tragically lost their lives in the recent fire at Green Cozy Cottage on Bailey Road. Justice was demanded for those accountable for the incident, with a call for preventive measures to avert such tragedies in the future.
The event also saw the presentation of the 2024 Ekushey Heritage Awards and Certificates, recognizing the outstanding contributions of individuals to volunteerism and community service in Edmonton, Canada. This year, the deserving recipients of the Ekushey Heritage Awards were Anamur Rahman (for community service), Sadiq Huda (community service), Saifur Hasan (volunteer activities), Ferdowsi Begum (community service), and Nasima Mirza (volunteer activities).
Since its inception in 2014, the Bangladesh Heritage and Ethnic Society of Alberta (BHESA) has been dedicated to honoring exceptional individuals and organizations within the Alberta community through its Ekushey Heritage Awards.
