A construction company will pay $144,000 related to a workplace injury. March 05, 2024: On March 1 in the Edmonton Court of Justice, Marathon Underground Constructors Corporation pled guilty to one charge under the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Act for failing to ensure the health and safety of a worker. Six other charges under OHS legislation were withdrawn. The charges stem from an incident on an Edmonton construction site on March 7, 2022. A worker was injured after the worker removed a piece of plywood that was covering a piling hole, took a step, and fell down the hole. Under a creative sentence, the company will pay $144,000 to the Alberta Construction Safety Association to support the development of a series of learning videos and a toolbox talk resource document. The OHS Act provides a creative sentence option in which funds that would otherwise be paid as fines are directed to an organization or project to improve or promote workplace health and safety. The company and the Crown have up to 30 days to appeal the conviction or penalty. Alberta’s OHS laws set basic health and safety rules for the province’s workplaces. They guide employers to help them ensure their workplaces are as healthy and safe as possible while providing rights and protections for workers. Charges under OHS laws may be laid when failing to follow the rules results in a workplace fatality or serious injury. Media Release.
More than 2,300 child-care providers will receive advance payments to help them continue to provide the services Alberta families rely on. Alberta child-care providers are a critical part of ensuring the province has a strong economy. Child-care providers have asked the government for changes to help address concerns on the timing of their payments. In response, Alberta’s government is fast-tracking $84 million in advance payments.

Satellite vaccine clinics have opened in emergency departments in hospitals around the province. Nine satellite clinics have already taken place, with more than 425 emergency department staff vaccinated. As more vaccine becomes available, additional clinics will be opened for eligible staff. The Government of Alberta is funding critical water projects across Alberta as part of the ongoing commitment to provide clean drinking water and wastewater treatment to rural Albertans.
More than $131 million from the Water for Life and the Alberta Municipal Water/Wastewater Partnership grant programs will support 29 water infrastructure projects across the province. Once projects get underway, the investment will help sustain approximately 900 jobs.
The approved projects include a wastewater line from Sylvan Lake to Red Deer, with $37 million in provincial Water for Life grants.
Three new judges have been appointed to the Provincial Court of Alberta according to news release. Among them Hon. Fatima Airth, Joshua Hawkes, Q.C., and Margaret Keelaghan, Q.C.
EDMONTON, AB (June 29, 2015): Alberta will take first step towards a $15 per hour minimum wage by 2018. Alberta's general minimum wage will increase to $11.20 from $10.20 per hour. The liquor server minimum wage will rise to $10.70 from $9.20 per hour in the first of two steps to eliminate the differential rate altogether in 2016.
